I feel as Africans we teach our boys/girls the wrong concept about belonging. We are born not only belonging to a family but also belonging to the community, which has its advantages and disadvantages.

In this family we are taught how to belong to a certain high status or certain 'norms' or at least how to thrive to belong.
In this family we are taught how to belong to the educational system as education is viewed as something someone of the high spectrum holds.
We are taught to belong to a career and not just any type of career but specifics such as Doctor, Lawyer and Engineer, those three are the only ones that are acceptable, to hell with everything else.
In this family we are taught how to belong to our husbands and throughout our lives we are taught the proper ways to be a wife.
We grow up with the mindset that it is our duties to provide for our wives.
We spent our lives focused on belonging as if it's our sole purpose in life.
May I ask, when do we actually belong to ourselves?
Why not focus more on being ourselves, exploring our God given talents, being different, being anything we put our mind to and finding out our true calling in life?!!
